Over the 2009-2010 fiscal year, the University cut 672 staff positions — approximately nine percent of the workers at Cornell. Since the start of the current school year, Cornell has cut an additional 61 positions.

The cut of at least $1 million mandated last year by the College of Arts and Sciences Dean for the Theatre, Film and Dance department has not just shrunk the department but fundamentally altered the structure and proportion of its diverse components.

The Initiatives Coordination Office has set forth a number of cost-cutting measures that are expected to save the University $75 million annually by 2015. 

The University announced yesterday that it has plans to save $90 million through administrative streamlining. President David Skorton and Provost Kent Fuchs also unveiled at a staff “Reimagining Cornell” forum a new set of cost-cutting guidelines that would, among other things, promote University-wide savings at the expense of colleges’ autonomous decision-making.

About 75 staff members attended the presentation in Biotech G10 yesterday, which was the fourth installment in a series of forums aimed at informing the community about strategic planning initiatives. This event was the first that directly addressed the concerns of the University’s administrative staff.

Last week, lawmakers gathered in Albany to meet with New York Gov. David Patterson in response to his new budget that failed to include funding for research programs that were funded last year. One noticeable absence was $450,000 in funding towards Cornell’s Program on Breast Cancer and Environmental Risk Factors. According to Newsday, without these same funds that the program received last year, the researchers would be forced to discontinue their work. The proposal also did not include the $300,000 for a hotline for breast cancer patients and their families based out of Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y.
